PRODUCT INFORMATION

DESCRIPTION:

NON-SLIP ADDITIVE is a unique coarse, texturising powder added to coatings to reduce slip on surfaces such as paths, floors, decks and driveways. 

PRINCIPAL USES:

As a Non-Slip Additive for coatings applied to walking surfaces to meet the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code D1.3.3(d).  

 

Can also be used to give a decorative textured or effect finish to coatings and for aesthetic effect.

 

FEATURES:

NON-SLIP ADDITIVE disperses easily and evenly through the coating giving a non-abrasive slip resistant finish to the coating.  

 

NON-SLIP ADDITIVE is a non-hazardous texturising agent that is free of crystalline silica and is lighter in weight and less abrasive than mineral texturising agents.  

 

Tested to AS/NZS 4586:2004 NON-SLIP ADDITIVE added to a water based paving paint at the recommended level gives, in wet conditions, 42 BPN and, in dry conditions, a COF of 0.85. This gives the water based paving paint containing NON-SLIP ADDITIVE a rating of F - Moderate to Very Low slip resistance when dry under AS/NZS4586:2004 and X - Moderate Slip resistance when wet according to HB 197:1999.

 

LIMITATIONS:

For use as a decorative textured or effect finish produce a test sample to determine if it is suitable for your application and gives the expected effect.

 

APPEARANCE: Clear Powdered Granules. NON-SLIP ADDITIVE normally does not change the product colour but does need to be checked prior to application.

 

APPLICATION DATA:

Refer to the Technical Data Sheet of the product to which NON-SLIP ADDITIVE is being added.  

 

Add slowly to the coating whilst stirring and mix thoroughly. Leave to stand for a minimum of 5 minutes, then mix again immediately prior to use and each time you use the product. Apply the paint evenly and generously. To ensure an even texture do not overwork or overbrush the finish.  

 

After application of the recommended primer coats (with the additive), at least two full finish coats of the paint containing  NON-SLIP ADDITIVE are required.

 

GENERAL DATA

Addition Level:

50 g/L to achieve the requirements of New Zealand Building Code D1.3.3(d). This is approximately 5 heaped tablespoons and for 4 litres this is 200 g.  

 

For decorative effects add any amount required to achieve the desired texture to a maximum loading of 200 g/L.

 

Gloss Level:

Due to the texturing nature of NON-SLIP ADDITIVE it will slightly reduce the gloss level of the product to which it is added.  

 

Application Temperature:

Refer to the Technical Data Sheet of the product to which MM NON-SLIP ADDITIVE is being added.

 

Shelf Life: Store in cool conditions, away from direct sunlight. Under normal conditions MM NON-SLIP ADDITIVE can be stored for several years.

  • How frequently should I plan to reapply for Aquamax Timber Stain, and what is its typical lifespan?
    Assuming thorough preparation and the timber is in good condition, applying two coats initially could provide protection for approximately 3 to 5 years. Consider applying a third coat of Aquamax in 2/3 years to enhance performance further. In some cases, we've observed instances where the stain remains effective for well over 6-8 years before requiring additional attention.
  • What surfaces can I use Aquamax Timber Stain on?
    Aquamax Timber Stain is suitable for use on rough-sawn, dressed, and softwood timbers like pine. It's ideal for exterior surfaces such as fences, gates, beams, trellis, and pergolas.
  • How do we treat moss, lichen and mould?
    For moss or lichen, it should be treated and left a few weeks before staining. Then prior to staining, remove dead material by scrapping, scrubbing or water blasting. If you are treating just a light mould problem, there is no need to wash off the treatment mix, providing the surface is clean. Ideally, it is best left on and painted over for long-term benefit, as it can help control regrowth. We recommend the use of Prepmax Timber Prep & Clean, we have also found the product called 30 Seconds ONE STEP (the green label) mixed with chlorine bleach (eg Janola) has the good success in treating mould, moss and lichen. Mix as follows: Water 4 parts (eg 4 litres) One Step (green label) 1 parts (eg 1 litre) Janola (or other chlorine bleach) ¼ part (eg 250 ml) ​ Note: Avoid using any cleaners that have sodium hydroxide (caustic soda) – if it is not washed off fully it will have a reaction with the linseed oil.
  • Gloss variation’s with Aquamax?
    Gloss variation’s can occur due to how much of the oil has been absorbed into the timber fibres. The situation 'evens out' to a low sheen finish over a period of time.
  • How far can we reduce the colours with Clear Base?
    A mixture of 10 litres of Clear Base mixed with 4 litres of Aquamax colour will still have good colour strength. We also have recorded instances of mixes of 10 litres of Clear Base to 3 litres of Brown Bean being applied to a house, and it is still performing as expected. A Clear Base/Rustic Oakwood mixture would not be able to be reduced as much as the Rustic Oakwood already has a reduced pigment level.
  • Can we use Aquamax on interior timber surfaces?
    Yes, it is a house-quality stain that can be used on interior, absorbent timber surfaces. Take care with items coming in contact with the newly stained surface until it is fully dried, as drying time is slower.
  • Can I use Aquamax on decks?
    No – we don’t recommend AQUAMAX to be used on decks; we recommend you use DECKMAX on decks. DECKMAX is designed for foot traffic.
  • How many coats of Aquamax Timber Stain should I apply?
    We recommend applying two coats of Aquamax Timber Stain for greater protection and opacity.
  • Can I apply Aquamax Timber Stain with a roller or brush?
    Yes, Aquamax Timber Stain can be applied using a brush, roller, or airless sprayer for your convenience.
  • How long does Aquamax Timber Stain take to dry?
    Aquamax Timber Stain is touch dry in approximately 90 minutes, with recoating possible the following day.
  • Is Aquamax Timber Stain suitable for previously stained surfaces?
    Yes, Aquamax Timber Stain can be used on previously stained surfaces, provided they are weathered and absorbent.
  • Can I use Aquamax Clear Base alone for exterior surfaces?
    Aquamax Clear Base is primarily used for diluting colours or as a primer for high-absorbency timber surfaces. It's not recommended for exterior use on its own due to lower durability compared to coloured options.

  • Does AQUAMAX contain mould inhibitors?
    Yes, all of our DECKMAX, AQUAMAX, TIMBERMAX, and MULTIMAX products include dry film mould protection. These additives help prevent mould from growing on the surface of the coated area. However, if mould is already present on the surface, it must be treated and removed before applying any coating. We recommend using products like PREPMAX for decks and GET-GONE for other surfaces to properly prepare them. Be sure to check the product label on the pail for additional information—it can sometimes be easy to miss.
  • Can you apply an acrylic stain or paint over a product that contains linseed oil?
    Not entirely true. If the surface is well-weathered, we have seen our MULTIMAX applied over the top. It depends on how much of the original stain is left. For example, with proper preparation on a timber deck—such as a good sanding and using PREPMAX—you should be fine to apply TIMBERMAX or MULTIMAX paint over it. However, it really comes down to how much of the old product remains. Be cautious with products made from mineral oils, like Wood-X Cedar Oil, Dryden’s Wood Oil, CD50, and CD50 Extreme, as they don’t fully dry and tend to leave a residue.
  • How do I apply PREPMAX?
    PREPMAX can be applied using a brush or broom. Ensure thorough coverage for effective cleaning and preparation.
  • When should I use PREPMAX?
    PREPMAX should be used before applying DECKMAX or any other coating. It's essential for preparing timber surfaces by cleaning and treating them effectively.

  • Can I use Prepmax Timber Clean & Preparation on all types of timber?
    Prepmax Clean & Preparation is versatile and suitable for various timber types. However, it's crucial to consider specific recommendations for different timber conditions: New Pine: New decking timber should be weathered for eight weeks. If the surface is shiny (mill-glazed), sanding may be necessary to allow proper penetration of the Timber Clean & Preparation product. New Hardwoods: For hardwood timbers, we recommend weathering for 12 weeks. This helps remove oily tannins and opens the fibers to aid penetration. Rinsing with water several times during this period is beneficial. Weathered Pine & Hardwoods: If you aim to restore the natural wood grain, badly weathered and greyed timber may require sanding back to a clean, sound surface. Previously Stained and Oiled Timber: Clean and treat with PREPMAX. For a natural wood grain look, sanding back to bare timber may be necessary, followed by cleaning with PREPMAX. To remove paint or other coatings down to a bare surface, a combination of paint remover and sanding should be used, followed by PREPMAX. Note: Heavy water blasting is not recommended as it can "fluff" the timber surface. Instead, use a low to medium-pressure wash down and/or scrubbing for effective and gentle cleaning.
  • Can PREPMAX be used on new pine decking?
    Yes, new pine decking should be weathered for eight weeks before application. PREPMAX helps prepare the surface by cleaning and treating it for optimal coating adhesion.
